The Beginning
The story starts with Charles Tanqueray, a man determined to create the perfect gin.
In 1830, he founded his distillery in London, experimenting with different botanicals and distillation techniques. At a time when gin production varied wildly in quality, Tanqueray focused on consistency and refinement.
His goal was simple, create a gin that stood above the rest.
Perfecting the Recipe
Tanqueray’s approach was meticulous. While many producers cut corners, he focused on selecting high-quality ingredients and refining his distillation process.
The result was a distinctive recipe built around four key botanicals, juniper, coriander, angelica root, and liquorice.
This balance gave Tanqueray its signature profile, bold juniper upfront, supported by subtle spice and a clean, dry finish.
It was a style that would go on to define London Dry Gin.
Surviving the Blitz
One of the most remarkable chapters in Tanqueray’s history came during World War II.
The distillery in London was heavily damaged during the Blitz, with most of it destroyed. However, one still survived, known today as “Old Tom”.
That surviving still became a symbol of resilience, allowing production to continue and the brand to rebuild after the war.
A Global Icon
Over time, Tanqueray expanded beyond the UK, becoming a global name in bars and homes alike.
Its versatility made it a favourite for classic cocktails like the gin and tonic and the martini, where its clean and balanced profile truly shines.
Today, it remains one of the most respected names in gin, a brand that has stayed true to its original philosophy while continuing to evolve.
